Getting in Shape for Hiking

Getting in shape for hiking improves your stability and strength on the trail. The process begins with creating a workout plan based on your current skill level. Make sure you pace yourself properly when executing this plan and gradually work up to long-distance hikes or difficult terrain over the course of several weeks. Doing so ensures that you don’t injure yourself while training.

As you do this, remember that you don’t have to incorporate hikes every day. In fact, walking around your neighborhood is a great way of strengthening your legs for long-distance hikes. This is perhaps the easiest way of increasing your distance since it’s so accessible.

Outside of walking, your workout plan must include some general cardio and strength training. This is best done either in an at-home gym or at your local gym. Make sure you incorporate resistance bands so your range of motion increases, along with crunches for balance, squats for strengthening core muscles, and push-ups for upper body strength.

Three of the Best Backcountry Hikes

Here are three of the best places to hike in Yellowstone’s backcountry. Will be heading there again myself in a few weeks!

Specimen Ridge Trail
Widely considered to be one of the best hikes in Yosemite, Specimen Ridge Trail features routes that cross summits and rivers. You may have the opportunity to see bears, antelope, and elk while hiking. The trail ascends more than 3,000 feet to Amethyst Mountain before it begins a 5-mile descent into Lamar Valley.

Sky Rim Trail
Sky Rim Trail features views of meadows covered with wildflowers and mountain peaks. You should plan for a day hike when heading to Big Horn Peak, which represents the tallest mountain on the Sky Rim trail. During the hike, you will encounter lodgepole pine forests and alpine lakes. You may also see wildlife near the craggy cliffs alongside the Sky Rim Trail such as big horn sheep, bears, and mountain goats.

Ribbon Lake Trail
An easy hike, Ribbon Lake Trail spans 4.7 miles. The hike features canyon views and picturesque lakes. Located close to the trailhead is Artist Point Overlook, which provides views of Yellowstone Canyon and Yellowstone Falls. On the hike to Ribbon Lake Trail, hikers will encounter various marshy areas.
